The Metric That Shows Up on Every Wearable

Heart rate variability — HRV — appears on Apple Watch, Oura Ring, Whoop, and most other consumer health wearables. It is one of the metrics that health-conscious people encounter first and understand least. HRV sounds like it measures how irregular your heartbeat is, which sounds worrying. It does not. What HRV Actually Measures

Your heart does not beat at perfectly even intervals — even a healthy heart at rest has slight variation in the time between beats. HRV quantifies that variation, typically in milliseconds. Higher variability — more irregularity between beats — reflects a nervous system that is responsive and well-regulated. RMSSD and SDNN: The Numbers Behind the Score

Consumer devices most commonly report HRV using RMSSD — the root mean square of successive differences between beat intervals. It is a measure of short-term variation that closely tracks parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) nervous system activity. Some devices report SDNN, which reflects broader variation over a longer window. When your device gives you a single HRV number, it is almost always RMSSD, measured during sleep when the signal is cleanest.

Why Your HRV Fluctuates

HRV is highly sensitive to alcohol, even in small amounts. A single drink can lower HRV measurably the following night. Intense exercise stresses the body productively, but HRV typically dips for 24–48 hours afterward as the body repairs. Poor sleep quality, travel, illness onset, and sustained psychological stress all lower HRV. Sustained aerobic fitness training is one of the most reliable ways to raise baseline HRV over months.
