The Oura Ring generates three daily scores — Sleep, Readiness, and Activity — alongside a continuous stream of underlying biometric data. Most users interact with the top-level scores. The underlying data — resting heart rate curves, HRV by sleep stage, body temperature deviation, respiratory rate, SpO2 — is where the real detail lives. Understanding what each layer measures makes the scores meaningful instead of arbitrary.
The Sleep Score
Oura's Sleep Score is a weighted composite of total sleep duration, sleep efficiency (time asleep divided by time in bed), sleep timing relative to your personal chronotype, REM sleep percentage, deep sleep percentage, and sleep stage distribution. Deep sleep — slow-wave sleep — is weighted heavily because it is the phase associated with physical restoration and immune function. REM sleep supports memory and emotional processing. A high sleep score reflects not just sufficient duration but quality composition across stages.
The Readiness Score
Readiness is Oura's daily recovery index. It draws from the previous night's sleep score, resting heart rate relative to your personal baseline (lower RHR typically indicates better recovery), HRV balance (how your current HRV compares to your recent rolling average), body temperature deviation from your baseline, and cumulative activity load from recent days. A green Readiness score does not mean you should push hard — it means your physiological indicators suggest capacity for effort.
Body Temperature Deviation
Oura measures skin temperature on your finger continuously throughout the night and tracks deviation from your personal baseline — not absolute temperature. A sustained elevation of 0.5°C or more above your baseline often precedes illness by 24–48 hours. Women using Oura for cycle tracking use temperature deviation as an indicator of ovulation and luteal phase — body temperature characteristically rises after ovulation and falls at cycle onset.
Resilience and Stress
Oura's newer Resilience feature synthesizes HRV, resting heart rate, and sleep data across a rolling window to reflect your nervous system's capacity to absorb stress. Lower resilience scores over consecutive days suggest accumulated load that has not been adequately recovered.
