Wearables Produce Data Faster Than Most People Can Interpret It

Apple Watch, Oura Ring, and Whoop each generate dozens of data points every day — some every second. Heart rate, heart rate variability, sleep stages, respiratory rate, blood oxygen saturation, skin temperature, activity readiness scores. The devices themselves surface some of this through their apps, but the underlying data is far richer than any single score or ring. The Metrics That Matter Most

Across devices, a handful of metrics have the strongest signal for everyday health awareness:

  • Resting Heart Rate (RHR): Your heart rate while at complete rest, typically measured during sleep. Trending upward over days often precedes illness or overtraining. Trending downward over weeks is a sign of improving cardiovascular fitness.
  • Heart Rate Variability (HRV): The variation in time between heartbeats. Higher HRV generally reflects a well-recovered, adaptable nervous system. Lower HRV can signal accumulated stress, poor sleep, or early illness.
  • Sleep Stages: Deep sleep is when physical repair happens. REM sleep is associated with memory consolidation and emotional processing. Light sleep is a transition state. Total sleep duration matters, but so does the composition.
  • SpO2 (Blood Oxygen Saturation): Normal range is 95–100%. Consistent readings below 94% during sleep can indicate breathing disruptions worth investigating.

What Readiness and Recovery Scores Are Calculating

Oura's Readiness Score and Whoop's Recovery Score are composite indexes that weight HRV, RHR, sleep quality, activity load, and recent trends to produce a single daily number. They are useful as a daily directional signal — not as a precise physiological measurement. A low score on a given morning reflects accumulated signals across multiple inputs, not a single definitive reading.
